Restylane is a family of dermal fillers, and each product is approved for different areas. The FDA's approval record lists the products and the year each use was approved.1 Ask which Restylane product is offered and whether it is approved for the area.
Here is what the record lists by use, how long hyaluronic acid fillers last and the risks. It gives no dose and no technique. Whether to have filler is for you and a clinician.
What the FDA record lists
The first Restylane was approved in 2005 for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. Lip augmentation was added in 2011.1 Perlane followed in 2007 for deeper folds and wrinkles. Restylane Lyft was approved in 2015 for folds and wrinkles and for cheek augmentation and midface contour, and later for the chin, in 2025.1

The record's age wording is "over the age of 21" for these products, which the FDA's consumer update gives as 22 and older.3 Our pages on cheek filler, lip filler and under-eye filler go through those areas.
How long it lasts
Restylane is a hyaluronic acid filler. The FDA says hyaluronic acid is a sugar found in body tissues such as skin and cartilage, that some is chemically modified (crosslinked) to last longer, and that the effects last approximately 6 to 12 months.2 The injections may need repeating to keep the effect.3 Our comparison of Juvederm and Restylane sets the two families side by side.
Myth
Restylane is one product that works for every area.
Fact
It is a family of products, each approved for specific uses. The FDA's record lists different Restylane products for wrinkles, lips, cheeks, chin, under-eye hollows and temples.
Risks
Common risks are bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, itching and rash. Most appear shortly after injection and many resolve in days to weeks.3 The most serious risk is accidental injection into a blood vessel, which the FDA says can cause skin necrosis (death of tissue), stroke or blindness. The chance is low, but the complications can be serious and may be permanent.3 Reducing or removing filler may need further injections or surgery.3
