In short
Five prescription botulinum toxin injections are FDA-approved to improve the look of frown lines between the brows: Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau and Daxxify.12345 Their labels differ on which other lines they cover, and Dysport's cosmetic use is limited to adults under 65.
Here is what each label says, what they share, and what that means when you compare brands. This page does not say which is better. The labels aren't head-to-head comparisons.
At a glance
What each label lists
Cosmetic uses on each FDA label
| Brand | Active ingredient | Cosmetic uses on the label |
|---|---|---|
| Botox Cosmetic | Active ingredient: onabotulinumtoxinA | Cosmetic uses on the label: Adults: glabellar lines, lateral canthal lines, forehead lines, platysma bands |
| Dysport | Active ingredient: abobotulinumtoxinA | Cosmetic uses on the label: Glabellar lines, in adults under 65 |
| Xeomin | Active ingredient: incobotulinumtoxinA | Cosmetic uses on the label: Adults: glabellar lines, horizontal forehead lines, lateral canthal lines |
| Jeuveau | Active ingredient: prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs | Cosmetic uses on the label: Adults: glabellar lines only |
| Daxxify | Active ingredient: daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm | Cosmetic uses on the label: Adults: glabellar lines |
Glabellar lines are the frown lines between the eyebrows. Lateral canthal lines are the lines at the outer corners of the eyes, often called crow's feet. Platysma bands are bands in the neck.
Jeuveau's label says it isn't approved for any condition other than glabellar lines.4 For any area a label doesn't list, ask what the use is based on.
Why you can't compare units
The labels agree on this. Each brand's units are specific to its own product and testing method, and can't be compared to or converted into another brand's units.1245 Xeomin's carton says dosing units of botulinum toxins aren't interchangeable between commercial products.3
So a clinic's price per unit for one brand tells you nothing about another brand's price per unit. Compare the cost of the whole treatment instead. Our Botox cost guide explains how clinics quote.
Myth
A unit of Botox is the same as a unit of Dysport.
Fact
The labels say each brand's units are specific to that product and cannot be compared to or converted into another brand's units.
What the labels don't settle
The labels are for each product on its own, and we don't read them as a head-to-head. Whether one suits you better is a question for a provider who knows your face and your history. Our comparison of Botox and Dysport goes into that pair.
At the clinics we list
4,468 of the 7,475 med spas we list offer Botox and 2,199 offer Dysport. The other three brands aren't counted here. Offering a brand doesn't tell you what a clinic stocks, so ask.6

Common questions
What is the difference between Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau and Daxxify?
All five are prescription botulinum toxin injections approved for glabellar lines. Botox Cosmetic and Xeomin also list other facial lines, and Dysport is limited to adults under 65. Their active ingredients differ.
Are Botox units the same as Dysport units?
No. Each label says its units are specific to that product and can't be compared to or converted into another brand's units.
Which is best, Botox or the others?
The labels don't rank them and aren't head-to-head comparisons. Ask a provider who knows your history which they would use and why.
Do all botulinum toxins carry the same warning?
Yes. All five labels carry a boxed warning that the toxin's effects can spread beyond the injection site, with swallowing and breathing difficulties that can be life threatening.
